In the Fall of 2012, I released an album of music written for the guitar which I recorded as part of the fulfillment of various requirements necessary to graduate from Ball State with a degree in Music Technology.
From the OG liner notes:
This album is a collection of works that I have written either for the guitar or with the guitar during my undergraduate study at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. My relationship with the guitar as an instrument is a complicated one. To this day, I still see the instrument as just a means to express my musical ideas. If there was some other device that I was more talented at, or one that offered more musical expression, or one that had a wider range of unique sounds, I would have written and recorded an album of that. But as it is, the modern guitar is what I know, and it is the means by which I have found my ideas flow most easily.
This album is more of an exploration of ideas rather than a demonstration of compositional or technical prowess. I don’t want to show off my “chops” as a performer, composer, or recording engineer. Rather, I want to make mistakes and learn from them. I want to see what happens when I take a rough idea and sculpt it into some audial thing. I recorded this album for myself, in order to hear my pieces the way I heard them in my head when I wrote them. And I want to leave it open-ended and make it clear that there is room for interpretation. I hope someone someday hears this and thinks, “I could improve this and make it my own.”
